Open a laptop at 3 pm in Karachi, Lahore or Multan and you will feel it: a hot base, a loud fan and a stiff neck by evening. For freelancers and remote workers who sit 8 to 10 hours a day, a laptop lying flat on the desk is the root of both problems.
Why laptops overheat in Pakistan
- Summer afternoons are hot, and many home offices do not run AC all day.
- A laptop lying flat blocks the intake vents on its underside.
- Trapped heat makes the fan louder and can slow the processor down.
Lifting the laptop a few centimetres lets air reach those vents and carries heat away from the body.
The neck pain nobody budgets for
When the screen sits at desk level, your head tilts forward for hours. That strain builds up in the neck and shoulders, especially during long client calls and deadline nights.
- Raise the screen so the top edge is at eye level.
- Pair the stand with a separate keyboard and mouse.
- Sit back and keep your elbows at about 90 degrees.
Plastic stand vs aluminum alloy stand
Cheap plastic stands
- Thin plastic can flex or crack under a 2 kg laptop.
- Plastic holds heat instead of releasing it.
- The angle often slips, so the laptop wobbles while you type.
Premium aluminum alloy stands
- Metal draws heat away from the laptop’s base, and the open frame lets air flow underneath.
- A sturdy build holds the laptop firmly at the angle you choose.
- Most fold flat, so they slip into a laptop bag for the cafe or co-working space.
A good aluminum stand costs more at first, but you buy it once instead of replacing a broken plastic one every few months.
What to check before you buy
- Adjustable height or angle.
- Non-slip silicone pads on the arms and base.
- Fits your laptop size, usually 10 to 17 inches.
- Foldable, if you work on the move.
